Title Making the EU CLEAN of AsBestos
Project Number 540447-LLP-1-2013-1-ES-LEONARDO-LMP

The motivation for ABClean

Asbestos is a group of naturally occurring minerals used in many products because it adds strength, heat-resistance and chemical resistance. Despite its many uses, asbestos is a hazardous material. If employers and workers do not have proper precautions for work around asbestos, workers may develop serious chronic health problems (lung cancer, asbestosis, mesothelioma…). According to the International Labour Organisation (ILO), around 100 000 people worldwide still die from exposure to asbestos every year. A fibrous form of six minerals, asbestos was widely used in Europe between the 1940s and 1980s, with three forms of asbestos acting as a key component of various products. Chrysotile, crocidolite and gruenerite asbestos were used in thermal insulation, fire protection and a whole array of building materials.

Workers that might be at risk of exposure are as follows:
-Construction workers
-Shipbuilding and repair
-Trains/ repair work
-Welders, sheet metal workers, boilermakers, smiths
-Rubber, paper, paints and varnishes
-Electricians, mechanics
-Ceramics
-Nuclear installations
-Retailers of asbestos articles
-Laboratory workers
-Service workers: ironer, surface cleaning
-Repair and maintenance (e.g. household appliances)
-Jewellers, goldsmiths
-Brewers, cider workers
-Emergency workers

Even if the European Union has banned all use of asbestos, extraction, manufacture and processing of asbestos products, during the 70s asbestos use was very common material in buildings and included a variety of products. Moreover, in 2009, 2 million tones of asbestos were mined worldwide. Russia was the largest producer with about 50% world share followed by China (14%), Brazil (12.5%), Kazakhstan
